Optimizing the Description tag

The content found in the META Description tag will be displayed in many, but not all, search engines in the result pages. It is is often listed as a sub-headline under your page title. Therefore, it is essential that you create a good description so that you not only support your keyword ranking goals but entice targeted visitors to click through to your site once they see the listing in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Example of a META Description tag:
Search Engine Optimization secrets and tips. Find all related SEO articles at John Shehata's blog.

The above tag would appear within the < HEAD > area.

  • Limit your META Description to 170 characters (including spaces) to be Google-safe and Yahoo-safe.
  • Try to place your primary keywords at the start of the tag.
  • Avoid repeating keywords in your meta description tag
  • Google displays text that includes the search terms. If the search term appears in multiple sections of your web page, snippets from different sections of your web page may be displayed. If the search term is found in your meta description tag, Google prefers to display meta description instead. Sometimes Google displays part of your meta description tag along with text from elsewhere it your page
